“Hello Spring” Banner + Felt Flower Tutorial Video
Before you start, watch this high-speed, step-by-step video that shows exactly how to make each type of felt flower and how to put your Spring banner together!
(The written steps are also below the video.)
Steps to Create this Spring DIY Wall Decor with Photos
First, download the files to your computer. You will get SVG files that you can use with a Cricut or PDF files that you can print and use as a pattern to cut your felt out with scissors.
>> Step 1A:
If you are using a Cricut to cut out your pattern, upload the SVG file into Design Space. You can adjust the size of the pattern by clicking and dragging the lower right corner. Use your felt with the pink fabric mat (for the Cricut Maker).
Click “Make It” and insert the mat into the Cricut. Be sure to use the rotary blade (which is best for cutting felt) then press GO on your machine.
Use your various shades of purple felt to cut out the flowers and the green felt for the leaves. Use your white felt to cut out the letters and the mint felt as the banner.
Here are all the details for what I used in Cricut Design Space:
- Letters are made in Montserrat Extra Bold font size 120 using white felt
- Banner is 7.022 W x 9.146 H using Minty green felt
- The rolled spiral flowers are 4.887 W x 4.236 H using lilac and purple pizzazz felt
- the folded felt flower circles are 2.458 W x 2.458 H using dark purple felt
- the Camelia flower uses 10 large petals (0.981 W x 1.033 H), 6 medium petals (0.773 W x 0.814 H) and 8 small petals (0.572 W x 0.603 H) using violet sky felt
Step 2: Make the Camelia felt flower
To make the Camelia, start with the 8 small petals. I used a little purple pom pom as a center to have something to glue the petals around. It just makes it a little easier to get the center of the bud formed.
Glue 3 of the small petals (POINTED END UP) around the pom pom to form a bud.
Continue overlapping and gluing the rest of the small petals with the point facing up, around the center piece.
Now take the 6 medium sized petals and glue them to the center piece POINTED DOWN. Overlap the petals as you go around and make 2 rows with the medium sized petals.
Lastly, take the 10 large petals and continue to glue them around the flower with the POINT DOWN. Overlap the petals as you go around.
When you finish with the petals you can cut a circle out of some purple felt and glue to the bottom of the flower to cover up the bottom of the flower and keep all the petals in place.
Step 3: Make the rolled spiral felt flowers
Once you get the rolled spiral flower pattern cut out, you will begin to roll the flower on the end WITHOUT the circle.
Place a small strip of glue along the edge and begin rolling the flower. Use small strips of glue and then roll so the glue doesn’t start to dry too fast.
Once you get the entire flower rolled, put some glue onto the circle and place over the bottom of the flower. Fluff the petals and you’re done!
Step 4: Make the folded felt flowers
I have a step by step tutorial on how to make these folded felt flowers. Watch the video too so you can see exactly how to put these flowers together.
Check out the post here and then come back to the post to finish up your spring themed banner.
To make the banner like the example here, I used Minty felt from Hobby Lobby.
I measured a wooden dowel to the size of my banner, and cut the remainder off.
I used a piece of twine and glued it to the wooded dowel to use as a hanger. Then I place the wooden dowel at the top of the banner, folded the top edge of the banner over the dowel and glued it down.
Cut out the letters in white felt. Arrange your “HELLO SPRING” letters along the top half of the banner and glue them in place.
Lastly, arrange the flowers onto the banner the way you like and glue in place.
You can fill in any gaps by adding some hand cut leaves and gluing them the the edge or between the flowers.
Now you can hang your DIY spring home decor felt flower banner and enjoy this wonderful time of year!
